Still very decent

The Baltic Capesize Index fell on Thursday as voyage rates came off the extraordinary highs seen during the week. But still there were sums of $100,000 and above on offer.

The period market, meanwhile, was in ruder health as even $60,000 a day was on offer for a short-term fixture.

Australian cargoes continued to shape the capesize and panamax markets while there was also good movement for panamaxes in the Atlantic.

--------------------------------------------
Capesizes (Index 87.118 USD/dagen)

MOL has the 180,200-dwt Gracious Eternity (built 2009) for a front haul at $116,000 a day. Alternatively the Japanese outfit can run an Atlantic roundtrip at $90,000.

The latter is also what Rio Tinto spent on a China-Australia roundtrip with the 151,000-dwt Bosporus (built 1995), rival BHP getting the 172,500-dwt CE-Alliance (built 2001) for the same journey at $100,000.

CTM spent a whopping $60,500 a day for between six and eight months with the 172,000-dwt Tianronghai (built 2000).

Both Grand China and Goldman Sachs outfit J Aron spent $45,000 a day for 11-13 months stints, the former with the 171,000-dwt Aquabeauty (built 2003) and the latter with the 175,600-dwt Chou Shan (built 2006).

--------------------------------------------
Panamaxes (Index 35.819 USD/dagen)

NYK splashed a huge $48,000 a day for an Asian itinerary with the 92,500-dwt Chiara d?Amato (built 2009).

Daiichi will head from Asia to Australia with the 82,500-dwt Dimitris Apesakis (built 2008) at $40,750, Bocimar doing the same with the 72,700-dwt Oriental Sun (built 1998) for $41,500.

The 74,000-dwt Elly (built 1999) and the 73,000-dwt Celerina (built 1999) were both booked for straight China-Australia roundtrips at $35,000 and $39,750 a day respectively.

Cargill has the 73,300-dwt Marine Prosperity (built 2001) from Brazil to the Persian Gulf at $40,000 a day plus a bonus of $800,000.

Oldendorff put down the same bonus and $36,000 a day for the 76,600-dwt Grand Diva (built 2007) to head from the US Gulf to the Black Sea.

In the Atlantic Noble and Vitol ties up roundtrips. The former spent $38,000 on the 74,000-dwt Rodon Amarandon (built 1997) and the latter $36,000 on the 74,300-dwt Georgios S (built 2001).

There were a whole raft of charters for between four and six months with hugely varying rates. STX Pan Ocean has the 75,000-dwt Trenton at $29,000, Cargill the 74,700-dwt Topeka (both built 2001) at $30,000, an unidentified player the 76,600-dwt Wen Zhu Hai (built 2008) at $32,000, United the 72,400-dwt Fu Min at $36,500 and Kristiana Marine the 74,000-dwt Riruccia (both built 1997) at $40,000.

United and Noble each fixed units for 11 to 13 months at $26,500 a day, the former the 76,700-dwt Red Jasmine (built 2006) and the latter the 76,500-dwt Navios Aldebaran (built 2008). The Australian Wheat Board also has the 69,100-dwt Yue Dian 81 (built 1997) for the same period at $22,000.

--------------------------------------------
Supramaxes (Index 25.847 USD/dagen

Rates were very steady here if unspectacular, an exception being the $38,000 a day spent on the 52,400-dwt Great Praise (built 2006) for a trip from the Black Sea to the Far East.

The 50,300-dwt Navios Vector (built 2002) will head from India to China at $26,000, just $1,000 a day more than the 51,200-dwt Papillon (built 2001) wangled from Hanjin for an Asian itinerary.

Period rates were good, both the 47,200-dwt Honesty Ocean (built 1997) and the 46,500-dwt Glarus (built 2001) getting $27,000 a day for about five months, the former going to Oldendorff and the latter Minmetals.
