Vista steps in

Vista, the charterer which rose from the ashes of bankrupt Ukrainian player Industrial Carriers Inc (ICI) went large on a panamax lift out of the Black Sea to the Far East.

The Ukrainian, set up by some former ICI employees, spent over $50,000 on at least one fixture while it could also have taken another.

The huge rate was not, however, to stop the panamax index from slipping, something which befell all indices.

Capesize rates for Australian pick-ups were still strong but there was not enough movement to sustain recent growth.

BHP Billiton booked both China-Australia roundtrips that were fixed. The Aussie miner spent a high $98,500 on the 149,800-dwt Martha (built 1994) and $90,000 on the 150,100-dwt GO Patoro (built 1991). The former is believed to leave first.

US bank Morgan Stanley spent $43,500 a day for between 11 and 13 months with the 171,000-dwt Aquabeauty (built 2003).

Vista?s confirmed punt from the Med to the Black Sea and Far East is the 73,800-dwt Great Century (built 1999) at $53,000 a day.

An unidentified player has also spent $52,000 a day on the 74,100-dwt COS Intrepid (built 2001) for an identical itinerary.

BHP raided mid-sized tonnage to continue its fixture of ships between China and Australia. The 76,700-dwt Navios Star (built 2002) went for $38,250 a day for the roundtrip.

STX Pan Ocean has the 75,200-dwt Trenton (built 1995) from India to China at $39,000 while the 69,600-dwt Beilun Dolphin (built 1997) went to a Indian charterer for a run in the opposite direction via Australia at $34,000.

Oldendorff has the 72,400-dwt Magda (built 1992) for a roundtrip in the Indian Ocean at $36,500.

It was much quieter on the Atlantic side but rates were steady. Glingrow has the 75,300-dwt Giovannia Iuliano (built 1997) for a run from the Baltic to the US Gulf at $36,000.
