Newcastle coal exports jump 64%
:
Thursday, 23 April 2009

Coal exports from Australia's Newcastle port, the world's largest coal export terminal, jumped 64 percent in the past week, while the number of coal ships arriving also increased, indicating firm demand for the fuel. Exports from the eastern coast port, which ships mostly thermal coal used in power generation, rose to 1.65 million tonnes in the week to April 20, port data showed on Tuesday.

A spokesman for the port said the sharp increase was in part due to port operations returning to normal after some restrictions were imposed on vessel traffic the previous week due to bad weather.

Industry sources said regional demand for Australian coal had also picked up in recent weeks as low prices encouraged Asian utilities to step up purchases.

The number of coal ship arrivals rebounded from a near nine-month low of 13 vessels to 21.

Waiting time for vessels scheduled to load coal dipped to 8.8 and there were 24 vessels off the port waiting to load 2.17 million tonnes of coal.

About 80 per cent of the coal shipped through the port is thermal coal used mainly by power stations. Companies shipping through Newcastle include Xstrata Plc, Coal & Allied Industries Ltd, majority-owned by Rio Tinto Ltd and Centennial Coal Ltd.

CMB re-enters tanker market
:
Written by Perter Clarkson Wednesday, 22 April 2009 23:09

Belgian shipping group CMB has decided to change the type and number of its ships currently on order with South Korea's Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC) from two 180,000-dwt Capesizes to three 115,000-dwt Aframax tankers.

Delivery is slated between 2010 and 2011.

CMB separated and listed its gas carrier division Exmar in 2003, and its tanker division Euronav in 2004, leaving its bulker giant, Bocimar, as the only subsidiary directly under its umbrella.

The recent change of ship type, however, will mark its re-entry into the tanker industry.

As of late December, CMB/Bocimar's fleet consisted of 18 bulkers, all of which were Capesizes with the exception of one Handymax.

With the recent change of ship type, the company's newbuildings on firm order now stand at six Capesizes, two post-Panamaxes, one Panamax, four Handymaxes, 11 Handysizes (all bulkers) and three Aframax tankers.
