Factory Index Rises For A Fourth Month As Recession Eases

Manufacturing shrank at a slower pace in April, a key gauge showed Friday, as
the economy struggles to emerge from its long slumber.

The Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index rose 3.8 points to
40.1, better than expected. It was the fourth straight gain and the best reading
since September, when Lehman's collapse sent global financial markets and the
economy into a tailspin.

The data are "consistent with the idea that the worst part of the decline in the
overall economy is behind us," said Scott Brown, chief economist at Raymond
James. Still, "none of these indicators are suggesting a strong recovery, or
even a modest one."

The ISM index has held below the neutral 50 level for 15 months, signaling a
continued decline in activity. Miscellaneous manufacturing was alone among ISM's
17 sectors in reporting growth.

ISM's new orders gauge jumped 6 points to 47.2, the highest since August and
close to break even.

However, a separate Commerce Department report showed new March factory orders
down 0.9%, a little worse than expected. Also, February's rise was revised down
from 1.8% to 0.7%.

Shipments fell 1.2% in March, a record 8th straight monthly drop.

When output does turn around, it will be from a very weak base.

The U.S. economy shrank at a 6.1% annual rate in Q1, Commerce said last week,
following Q4's 6.3% plunge. Business cut investment at a 38% pace while slashing
inventories aggressively.

But consumer spending rose at a 2.2% rate in Q1, though gains seemed to fade in
March.

Automakers on Friday reported their worst U.S. sales in nearly three decades,
missing forecasts.

Chrysler, which filed for bankruptcy protection on Thursday, said April U.S.
sales dived 48% vs. a year earlier. It's idling all U.S. plants for the 60 days
it says it expects to be in Chapter 11.

GM (NYSE:GM - News), which faces a June 1 deadline to submit a restructuring
plan, said its sales fell 34%.

Ford (NYSE:F - News) said sales fell 32%, outselling Toyota (NYSE:TM - News) in
the U.S. for the first time in a year. Toyota -- which relied far less on
incentives than its U.S. rivals -- said sales sank 42%. Nissan's (NasdaqCM:NSANY
- News) dived 38% and Honda's (NYSE:HMC - News) dropped 25%.

GM's shares fell 6%, Ford's 5%.

Soaring unemployment makes it hard to project a robust consumer revival. Still,
low gasoline prices, rising stock values and record-low mortgage rates have
helped calm Americans' fears.

The Reuters-University of Michigan consumer sentiment index jumped to 65.1 in
April from an initial reading of 61.9 and March's 57.3. The IBD/TIPP Economic
Optimism Index and several other confidence gauges also have rebounded from
longtime lows.

On Friday, the Economic Cycle Research Institute said its Weekly Leading Index
rose 0.5 point 12ast week to 107.7. The index's growth rate rose to -17.4% --
the sixth straight increase and the best reading since last October.

ECRI, which has a good track record of predicting changes in the business cycle,
said Thursday that the "convincing" upturn in its leading indexes signals that
the recession will run its course by the end of summer.

But don't expect a quick hiring revival. ISM's employment gauge rose 6.3 points
to 34.4. That along with a recent dip in new jobless claims suggests job losses
may ease somewhat, but still be very high.

Economists expect Friday's employment report to show payrolls fell by 620,000
jobs in April after March's 663,000. Unemployment is seen rising to 8.9%.

Stocks seesawed after Friday's data, closing with modest gains.
