Indices dive
After such sustained activity at high rates in the past few weeks, it is perhaps not surprising that the capesize sector went quiet on Thursday.
The index plummeted as charterers turned to the panamax market to fish for Australian cargoes headed to China.
This did not really buoy rates, however, and even in the supramax market – which has failed to get any significant kick back from the recent dry-bulk surge – rates were weak.
Capesizes
Classic Maritime spent a large $65,000 per day on between five and seven months with the 177,900-dwt Madeira (built 2007). The George Economou-led company only yesterday booked the 173,400-dwt NSS Advance (built 1995) for three to five months at $63,000.
Panamaxes
Rio Tinto, along with BHP Billiton, has been one of the main movers of late and dipped into the panamax market to grab the 76,800-dwt Alessandro Volta (built 2005) for a roundtrip from the Far East to China at $34,000 a day.
The 75,500-dwt North Prince (built 1999) was taken on a similar itinerary at $30,000 a day while STX Pan Ocean has the 73,600-dwt Atlantic (built 1996) on a straight China-Australia roundtrip at just $27,000.
The best rate was $43,750 paid by Transgrain for a trip from Europe to the Persian Gulf.
TMT paid a decent $32,000 daily for about eight months with the 82,900-dwt Yasa Neslihan (built 2005), the Turkish ship hijacked in October off Somalia and released in January.
GMI paid $23,000 per day for three to five months with the 64,200-dwt Wadi Al Arish (built 1994) and STX has the 68,400-dwt Evrialos (built 1987) for the same period at $20,500.
Supramaxes
$25,000 a day was a high point, Bunge splashing out on a southern Atlantic-Far East spin with the 58,500-dwt Magic (built 2008).
The 46,600-dwt Blue Sand (built 1998) got $19,000 a day for a West Africa-US Gulf-Europe itinerary.
The 50,300-dwt Falcon (built 2001) will do an Indian Ocean roundtrip for Scottish & Southern at $15,200 a day while ED&F has the 50,300-dwt Condor (built 2001) from the Indian Ocean to China at $16,000.
Period rates were just about comparable with Hong Xiang paying $20,500 per day for a year with the 53,600-dwt Vela (built 2007). This is a good deal more than the $13,600 a day paid by Bunge last week for a year with the 50,300-dwt Harrier (built 2001).
Norden has the 53,600-dwt Delmar (built 2006) for four to six months at $19,500 per day.
