Not for the first time this month RBD Armatori is making a killing off a capesize relet, this time Rio Tinto taking the ship.
The miner is paying a softer rate for a China-Australia roundtrip than has been seen in June and panamax rates on the same route are also on the slide.
Capesizes
Rio has booked the 149,200-dwt Huitai (built 1996) for a straight China-Australia roundtrip at $68,000. Italian RBD Armatori only took the ship in early June for a year at $33,000 a day.
Cosco is paying $57,000 daily for between 11 and 13 months with the 170,400-dwt Alpha Millenium (built 2000) showing how much period rates have listed since the start of the month.
Panamaxes
BHP Billiton is also going from China to Australia and back with the 76,700-dwt Royal Breeze (built 2002) at $23,500 a day.
There were also a couple of similar roundtrips but starting out of Japan and showing differing rates. Danzas has the 74,500-dwt Majorca (built 2005) at $23,500 but another player had to pay $30,000 for the 69,300-dwt Energy (built 1993).
The gap between rates on the Atlantic and Pacific sides narrowed considerably with Swiss Marine taking the 75,900-dwt Brunhilde Salamon (built 2001) for northern Europe/Baltic spin at $28,000 and the 76,000-dwt Volumnia (built 2002) getting $27,000 for an Asian itinerary.
Going from India to China for Noble is the 72,400-dwt Giovanni (built 1996) at $25,000 but Oldendorff only had to find $17,000 for an almost reverse itinerary with the 69,400-dwt Mastrogirogis (built 1984).
Period charter rates were weak as Michele Bottiglieri spent $20,500 a day on half a year with the 70,100-dwt Powerful (built 1994).
And Richstone has the 97,600-dwt Tian Sheng 15 (built 1991) for 11 to 13 months at $18,750.
Supramaxes
Rates were eroded less here than in other asset classes but they have also not seen the large rises of late.
Cargill has the 53,500-dwt Navios Astra (built 2006) for four to six months at $16,000 and Eastern Ocean spent $14,250 a day on the 48,600-dwt Aquila Atmosphere (built 2002) for three or four months.
$27,500 a day was a high from Norden for a US Gulf-Far East voyage with the 52,500-dwt Imperial Spirit (built 2005).
And Seawin has the 54,200-dwt Jin Shun (built 2009) for an India-China trip at $22,500.
