SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Hyundai Motor's net profit nearly quadrupled in the fourth quarter on higher sales following a strong performance during 2009 in the fast-growing Chinese and Indian auto markets.
South Korea's largest automaker and a growing force in the global market, earned 945.5 billion won ($820 million) in the three months ended Dec. 31, it said in a statement Thursday. Hyundai Motor Co. reported net profit of 243.5 billion won the same period the year before.
The Ulsan, South Korea-based maker of the Elantra and Sonata sedans and the luxury Genesis said sales during the quarter rose 9.3 percent to 9.65 trillion won from 8.83 trillion won a year earlier.
For all of 2009, Hyundai recorded a net profit of 2.96 trillion won, more than doubling from 1.45 trillion won in 2008. Sales for the year, however, fell 1 percent to 31.9 trillion won from 32.2 trillion.
Hyundai reported big gains in sales volume in China and India in 2009 from the year before. It also said that profits in China soared while in India it made money after a loss the year before.
Hyundai, which along with affiliate Kia Motors Corp. forms one of the world's five biggest automotive groups, has seen its market share grow worldwide in recent years through an emphasis on quality and design.
Both companies have expanded aggressively overseas. Hyundai has factories in China, India, Turkey, the U.S. and the Czech Republic. Kia has plants in China and Slovakia and began production in the United States last year.
Shares in Hyundai Motor, which released results during afternoon trading, rose 4.1 percent to close at 113,500 won. The stock price tripled in 2009.

DETROIT ? The Ford Motor Company earned $2.7 billion in 2009 and said Thursday that it now expected to be profitable in 2010, as well.
The profit for 2009, equal to 86 cents a share, was a swing of $17.5 billion from 2008, when the company lost $14.8 billion. It is Ford?s first full-year profit since 2005.
The company ended 2009 with $25.5 billion in cash reserves, nearly twice the $13.4 billion it had at the start of the year.
It also expects an operating profit in 2010, which is a year sooner than executives had previously said the company would become consistently profitable.
It was profitable in every region, including North America for the second consecutive quarter. North America, which has been the greatest source of difficulty for all automakers, was Ford?s most profitable region in the fourth quarter, with pre-tax earnings of $707 million.
Fourth-quarter revenue was $35.4 billion, up $6.4 billion from a year ago. For all of 2009, revenue fell $19.8 billion, to $118.3 billion.
The full-year earnings means hourly employees will receive profit-sharing checks averaging $450, Ford said.
Ford happily separated itself from General Motors and Chrysler in 2009 by not taking government loans and filing for bankruptcy. That helped the company improve its reputation and win new customers.
Ford increased its market share in the United States for the first time since 1995, even as it raised profit margins by reducing customer discounts.
Lately, Ford has been a bright spot for the industry amid what are still fairly dismal selling conditions. It won both the North American car and truck of the year awards at this month?s Detroit auto show. Shares of Ford surged to more than $12 this month, from a low of $1.50 in early 2009.
Ford is among the carmakers that analysts expect to benefit most from the troubles at Toyota, which has recalled 5.3 million vehicles since November and this week stopped selling eight models as it seeks replacement accelerator pedals.

og solgte så i slutningen af oktober omkring knapt 9 dollar da jeg følte at markedet skulle korrigere
hvad markedet så også gjorde og jeg har ikke fået købt ford igen da jeg har fundet andre aktier, der har været meget bedre indtil jeg solgte her i de sidste 2 uger og hvad der så skal ske fremover er ret spændende
men jeg mener stadig at elektronik aktier og forbrugsaktier er det bedste at investere i
og solgte så i slutningen af oktober omkring knapt 9 dollar da jeg følte at markedet skulle korrigere
hvad markedet så også gjorde og jeg har ikke fået købt ford igen da jeg har fundet andre aktier, der har været meget bedre indtil jeg solgte her i de sidste 2 uger og hvad der så skal ske fremover er ret spændende
men jeg mener stadig at elektronik aktier og forbrugsaktier er det bedste at investere i
