Igår på DR2 i Danskernes Akademi var det et spændende foredrag omkring

Den magiske kugle

Som et eksempel herpå vil Ole G. Mouritsen fortælle om de naturvidenskabelige principper, der ligger bag fremstilling af nano-kapsler kaldet liposomer, som kan benyttes til at indkapsle lægemiddelstoffer. De kan desuden indrettes, så de kan cirkulere i blodbanen og automatisk helt af sig selv finde frem til sygdommen, fx en kræftknude.

Liposomet kan indstilles som en slags bombe, en magisk kugle, der eksploder i det syge væv og kun dér. Liposomer af denne typde er netop nu under afprøvning på mennesker.

Når jeg fremhæver netop denne udsendelse, er det fordi der snart kommer diverse komferencer omkring bl.a. cancerterapier

så det kan være en nyttig baggrundviden til forståelse af værdien af de nye resultater der måtte blive præsenteret via konferencerne.

ABOUT THE MEETING
In randomized clinical trials, some cancer immunotherapies have shown improvements in patient survival without corresponding changes in progression-free survival, response, or tumor biomarkers. The identification of such corresponding predictors of individual patient survival remains elusive and critical to advancement of the field. The 2010 Scientific Colloquium will focus on this clinical conundrum and aim to elucidate its underlying biology. Further, it will offer directions on how to address these gaps by drawing from expertise within and outside the immunotherapy community as well as principles from the clinical development paradigm for cancer immunotherapies. The 2010 Annual Meeting will focus on future directions of the field and address specific practical needs of the community. In particular, the need for a data reporting framework for immune monitoring results in publications is being addressed through a Consortium initiative known as MIATA (Minimal Information About T-cell Assays).

I forlængelse af Hya's skriv er det værd at gøre opmærksom på selskabet PCI BIOTECH, der er noteret på axess i Norge.

Selskabet har flot kassebeholdning, kun ca. 5 mill. aktier er steget fra kurs 10-12 den 20. januar til i dag kurs 34.

Selskabet er sluppet excellent fra et forsøg udført i London med 7 forsøgspersoner, der fik deres patenterede fotokemiske PCI-behandling og efterfølgende lysbehandling. Alle 7 personer fik deres cancerknuder illimineret efter få uger.

PCI Biotech® has developed a unique and patented photochemical drug delivery technology for use in cancer therapy and other diseases.

PCI (PhotoChemical Internalisation) is a technology for light-directed drug delivery by triggered endosomal release and was developed to introduce therapeutic molecules in a biologically active form specifically into diseased cells. The company?s lead candidate drug is the proprietary photosensitiser Amphinex®.

PCI Biotech® has an ongoing clinical phase I/II study at University College Hospital in London. In this study Amphinex® is combined with the cytotoxic agent bleomycin. The study is primarily enrolling patients with Head & Neck cancer, a disease with local control issues that the PCI technology could potentially contribute to solve.

The company has initiated pre-clinical trials for the use of PCI in the treatment of bladder cancer. Bladder cancer has the highest average per-patient life-time cost of all cancers, mainly due to a high recurrence rate. The currently used chemotherapeutic drugs have limited effect on recurrence and progression, and there is a large unmet therapeutic need. Screening studies indicate that the effect of several of these chemotherapeutic drugs may be significantly enhanced by PCI. The pre-clinical trials will be performed at Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands and at The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway.

PCI Biotech® collaborates closely with The Norwegian Radium Hospital in Oslo, Norway and receives substantial funding on several projects from both the Norwegian Research Council and the EU. The company has an extensive international collaboration network with recognised drug delivery expert groups.



Oslo, 19 January 2010 - PCI Biotech reported today that it has completed the treatment of the second dose group in the phase I/II study of its proprietary photosensitiser Amphinex® used in combination with the cytotoxic agent bleomycin in cancer patients. To date seven patients have been given a single photochemical internalisation (PCI) treatment of Amphinex® with all the treated tumours in all patients disappearing within a few weeks of treatment. Furthermore, no drug-related serious adverse events have been recorded.
?We are very excited by the positive results that have been reported from University College Hospital (UCH) in London. The strong antitumour response seen in all patients treated with Amphinex® is far better than expected at the first dose levels and indicates that the positive pre-clinical results obtained with our PCI technology are transferrable to treatment in humans?, says PCI Biotech CEO Per Walday.

Oj, lige præcis dér er jeg ret meget inde i virkningsmekanismer und so weiter, var ret interesseret i det inden jeg skiftede område for nogen år siden. Så hvis der er nogen der sidder med spørgsmål vil jeg gerne være behjælpelig med svar.

Men er ikke så meget forbi PI for tiden, så smid gerne en pm på min profil, så jeg ikke overser evt. henvendelser

Jeg håber inderligt, at det lykkedes.

Men gennem mange år har jeg studeret området og set at fremskridtene ikke sker med voldsom fart og at man støder på skuffelser gang på gang.
