Diana tied to bulker buy
Diana Shipping has tapped into its huge cash reserve to buy a new post-panamax bulker, TradeWinds understands.
The New York-listed owner is being tipped as the buyer of the 92,500-dwt East Sunrise 88, sources tell TradeWinds Monday.
Independent shipbroking sources say Diana has paid just shy of $41m for the vessel, which was completed in January this year by Jiangsu New Yangzijiang in China.
Talk of the deal comes only days after TradeWinds reported George Economou had picked up a distressed post-panamax newbuilding from the same yard for just over $41m.
Diana executives are unwilling to comment on the rumours sweeping through shipbroking offices today.
Diana's management, led by Simeon Palios, has for some time been talking up the prospects of the company buying vessels when it felt prices were right.
The company, which presently operates a fleet of 22 bulkers, had cash reserves of $298m at the end of the second quarter.
